Have Solar Panels on the Roof but No Working Solar Heat?
One of the most common situations we see in Margate is a pool with solar pool heating equipment clearly visible on the roof — and no solar heat reaching the water. The system may have been turned off years ago, bypassed during other pool work, or simply left in place by a previous owner.
Can the Existing System Be Put Back Into Service?
We evaluate the complete system — collectors, plumbing, and controls together — so the recommendation follows what we find. Some systems come back online with minor work, others need selected components replaced, and some are no longer practical to revive. A bypassed system is one where the plumbing has been configured so water returns to the pool without circulating through the rooftop collectors. We trace how the plumbing is currently routed before recommending any change.
Missing or Failed Solar Controls
In many dormant systems the collectors are not the problem — the controls are. Restoring a failed controller, a dead sensor, or a disconnected actuator can be the step that brings an otherwise complete collector array back online. A failed or outdated solar controller can often be replaced with a current model, and the roof and pool sensors that feed it can be replaced at the same time. The actuator motor turns the automatic solar valve; if it has failed or been disconnected, the valve can stay on pool return and water never reaches the collectors. Florida Solar Pro does not automatically assume another contractor’s workmanship warranty.

Margate Solar Pool Heating Restoration FAQ
I bought a house with solar pool panels. How do I know if they still work?
The only reliable way is to have the system evaluated. We inspect the collectors, headers, connections, rooftop plumbing, solar valve, actuator, controller, sensors, and circulation to determine what is still functional and what it would take to put the system back into operation. We do not assume an inherited system is either good or bad until we have actually inspected it.
Can an old solar pool heating system be put back into service?
Often yes, but not always. A system that was simply turned off may come back online with minor repair or control work, while one with degraded collectors, altered plumbing, or failed components may need more. We evaluate the complete system first and tell you honestly whether restoration is practical before recommending any work.
What does it mean when a solar pool system has been bypassed?
A bypassed system is one where the plumbing has been configured so water returns to the pool without circulating through the rooftop collectors. This can happen when a valve is manually repositioned, an automatic solar valve is left on pool return, or the plumbing was altered during other pool work. We trace how the plumbing is currently routed before recommending any change. We do not provide DIY valve-reconfiguration instructions.
Can a failed actuator prevent the entire solar system from working?
Yes. The actuator motor turns the automatic solar valve that directs water to the roof. If the actuator has failed or been disconnected, the valve can stay on pool return and water never reaches the collectors, even if the controller is calling for heat. We test valve position and actuator response before assuming the collectors are the problem.
Can an old solar controller be replaced?
Yes. A failed or outdated solar controller can often be replaced with a current model, and the roof and pool sensors that feed it can be replaced at the same time. Restoring the control side is frequently the step that brings a serviceable collector array back into operation. Control and electrical work is performed by our technicians on-site.
Can good collectors be reused if only part of the system has failed?
Often yes. A system does not automatically need complete replacement just because one collector or one control has failed. We evaluate the individual collectors, the remaining array condition, compatibility, plumbing, and controls, and serviceable components may be retained while the failed portions are repaired or replaced.
Can Florida Solar Pro identify what brand of solar system I have?
In many cases yes. We can often identify whether an existing system is Heliocol, SunStar, or another brand during an on-site inspection by examining the collectors, headers, and plumbing. Identifying the brand helps us determine parts availability, compatibility, and whether manufacturer warranty assistance may apply.
Can Heliocol systems that have been shut down be restored?
Florida Solar Pro is an authorized Heliocol dealer and service provider and can evaluate existing Heliocol systems that have been shut down or are no longer operating. We inspect the collectors, plumbing, valves, actuators, controllers, and sensors to determine what is still serviceable and what it would take to reactivate the system. We do not guarantee every shut-down Heliocol system can be restored.
Can SunStar systems that are not operating be evaluated?
Yes. Florida Solar Pro is an authorized SunStar dealer and service provider and evaluates existing SunStar systems that are not operating, whether they were turned off, bypassed, or simply stopped working. We review collector condition, plumbing, controls, valves, and flow before recommending whether restoration or replacement makes more sense.
What if I do not know who originally installed the system?
That is common. Florida Solar Pro can evaluate appropriate existing Heliocol, SunStar, and other solar pool heating systems even when the homeowner does not know the original installer. Florida Solar Pro does not automatically assume or inherit another contractor’s workmanship or installation warranty; we evaluate the equipment on its own condition.
Can Gulfstream be added after the solar system is restored?
It may be an option when the restored solar equipment remains serviceable and you want additional heating capability. A Gulfstream heat pump can provide supplemental heat alongside the solar contribution rather than replacing it. We evaluate the condition of the restored solar equipment, your pool, and your heating goals before recommending whether adding supplemental heat makes sense.
Should an inactive solar system be evaluated before reroofing?
Yes. Before the collectors come off for a reroof, an inactive system should be inspected so you know what is serviceable, what may need replacement, and whether restoration or replacement is the better path while the equipment is accessible. We do not guarantee every existing collector can be reused after a reroof; components are inspected after removal, and failed or unsuitable equipment may require separately authorized replacement.
